SOLUTIONS : Oracle Database Licensing

These are the licensing rules used in the Data Analytics module.

General Rules

  • Oracle licenses are assigned only to physical servers.

  • Oracle license metrics are based on physical servers or processors, never on virtual servers or processors.

  • Oracle license types are “Named User Plus” and “Processor”.

  • If a server is licensed by Processor, then no Named User Plus licenses are required for that server.

  • If a server is licensed by Named User Plus, then no Processor licenses are required for that server.

  • By Options and Management Packs, we mean the extra-cost options and management packs.

  • An environment is either a physical operating system environment (POSE) or a virtual operating system environment (VOSE) on which an Oracle Database is installed or running.

Enterprise Edition

Named User Plus

  • Minimum is 25 licenses per processor.

  • All users of all environments hosted on the server must be licensed.

  • First example: if a server has 1 processor and hosts 4 VOSEs, then you must assign a minimum of 25 licenses to the server.

  • Second example: if a server hosts 2 VOSEs (and no POSE), each used by the same 150 users, then you must assign 150 licenses to the server.

  • Third example: if a server hosts 2 VOSEs (and no POSE), each used by a completely different set of 150 users, then you must assign 300 licenses to the server.

Processor

  • Must license all physical cores, counting cores according to the Oracle core factor table.

  • One license entitles to one physical core.

  • No additional licenses are required for any environments that are hosted on the server. This means the server may host an unlimited number of OSEs running Oracle database Enterprise Edition.

Standard Edition

Named User Plus

  • Minimum is 5 licenses.

Processor

  • Must license all physical CPUs.

  • One license entitles to one physical CPU.

  • May be licensed only on servers that have a maximum capacity of 4 CPU sockets.

  • When used with Oracle Real Application Clusters, may be licensed only on a single cluster of servers supporting up to a total maximum capacity of 4 CPU sockets.

Standard Edition One

Named User Plus

  • Minimum is 5 licenses.

Processor

  • Must license all physical CPUs.

  • One license entitles to one physical CPU.

  • May be licensed only on servers that have a maximum capacity of 2 CPU sockets.

Personal Edition

Named User Plus

  • One license per database (not more than one).

Processor

  • Not offered (The Personal Edition can be licensed only using the Named User Plus license type).

Express Edition

  • Free, but usage is restricted.

Options and Management Packs

  • Enterprise Edition: No options or management packs are included. All of the options and management packs can be purchased.

  • Standard Edition: Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) option is included (version 10g and up). None of the options or management packs can be purchased.

  • Standard One and Express Editions: No options or management packs are included. None of the options or management packs can be purchased.

  • Personal Edition: All of the options, except Oracle RAC, are included. None of the management packs are included.

Named User Plus

  • A licensed Named User Plus may access the program (database server or option) on any instances where it is deployed, provided that the license minimums, if any, on each server are met.

Development

  • Customers may download Oracle technology products from the Oracle Technology Network.

  • This limited license gives the user the right to develop, but not to deploy, applications using the licensed products.

  • The OTN Development License is a limited license, and is not part of the Oracle License and Services Agreement (OLSA).
